The Ragdoll cat's personality
Except for its exotic and flourishing fur, combined with heavenly blue eyes that pierces through the room from behind its natural colourpoint facemask, the Ragdoll is a reasonably normal cat. A potential cat owner who’s not looking for an over-energic, hyper-social cat with a needy vocabulary, the Ragdoll is a breed worth contemplating.
The Ragdoll is an intelligent and docile breed that can be trained to behave well-mannered, given the proper training and adequate amount of patience. Or at least to stay off the kitchen table and countertops, as well as a series of other minor manner matters.
The breed is somewhat lazy, and a potential owner must be prepared to activate the cat to avoid obesity; however, the Ragdolls docility does make going for walks with the cat on a lead a lot easier. The breed does want to play every now and then, but usually only for short periods at the time.
Compared to many intelligent cat breeds, the Ragdoll isn’t a needy cat that will pester its owners for attention. However, it is highly affectionate towards its owners and will develop strong bonds requiring daily physical contact.
The Ragdoll quickly becomes lonely if there are no one around, so if its owners work long hours, leaving the cat alone for most of the day, they should contemplate getting another ragdoll so they can keep each other company.
However, it is a forgiving breed that will come running to greet its owners at the door.
The typical health of a Ragdoll cat
The Ragdoll cats are genetically a healthy breed, but it is up to the owner to make sure the cat does not get overweight, as that would make it considerably more prone to blood clots and kidney stones. Decent walks and a proper diet are essential to keep a happy and healthy Ragdoll.
How much grooming and maintenance does a Ragdoll cat require?
The Ragdoll requires daily grooming as it has a double-layered coat that sheds a lot. Luckily, this breed enjoys grooming and perceives it as snuggle time rather than a mandatory hygiene measure. It is recommended to brush it a bit every day to remove hair and prevent matting. Grooming can easily be combined with the daily dose of affectionate caring that needs doing either way.
Other than that, regular cat maintenance is required, such as dental care, cleaning of eyes and ears, and the occasional bath.
The history of the Ragdoll cat
The Ragdoll is a famously easy-going cat, and not without reason. A woman named Ann Baker, who lived in California, USA, in the 1960s had a cat that produced a litter, whereas two of the kittens behaved remarkably well as they grew up.
She noticed this and kept breeding these extraordinary cats. The best-behaved cats from the next litters she continued to breed and mixed in other breeds known for their good behaviour until she had the perfect creature known today as the Ragdoll. Most cat organisations recognised it as a breed by 1993.
Ragdoll cat price
The price of a ragdoll cat depends much on its purpose. A normal cat can cost at least $800USD, while a cat made for shows and breeding can cost up to $5000USD if has the right colours and genes. Either way, spend some time and find a serious breeder before you purchase a cat to ensure the wellbeing of the kittens you buy.
