Do cats get bored?
An understimulated cat can be difficult to deal with– here's how you make sure it stays happy!
Do cats get bored and why you should entertain your cat
An indoor cat has limited opportunities for mental and physical stimuli outlets. Outdoor cats can navigate freely, explore their sense of smell by following trails and smells wherever they wish. They can hunt, taste things, climb houses and trees, meet other cats and in general, use the world as their playground. Inside cats are deprived of many of these things, which is why an inside cat owner must remember to enrich their cat’s environment.
What happens when a cat is bored?
A cat with a lack of mental and physical stimuli can become a bit of a devil. They become restless, bored, and can become depressed and anxious as a consequence.
A cat in such a state will likely develop destructive behaviour. They will knead their claws on your furniture, climb your bookshelves, so everything in it drops to the ground, and they will explore your house with the utmost curiosity.
Anxious cats are no joke; they will become excessively vocalised, aggressive, stressed, and in the worst-case scenario, commit inappropriate elimination and defecation in your house.
Luckily, cats are not that hard to entertain, and there are simple steps you can follow to make sure your cat is happy.
How do I entertain my bored cat?
Cats are social creatures who form strong bonds with their owners and will often rely on them as a source of activation. However, an owner can’t always play with their cat and aren’t always home. Therefore, the owner will have to supply the cat with some equipment and stimuli to thrive on its own.
For example, if you are going away for a good few hours, make sure to stimulate your cat mentally before you leave. Play with it, train it, and give it cuddles before you go so that its social batteries need charging by the time you leave.
This can be helpful for some time, but chances are its batteries will be fully charged before you get back. So, what else can you do to help the cat activate and entertain itself?
